The accident statistics for 2021 closed at an all-time low. In the first nine months of 2022, however, the number of traffic fatalities is again rising noticeably. More in-depth figures are only available for the months up to September, but the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden (Destatis) nevertheless expects the number of traffic fatalities in Germany in 2022 to rise by around nine percent year-on-year, after falling to a historic low in 2021. According to the Destatis projection based on available data for the period from January to September 2022, the number of people killed in road traffic will increase by more than 220 to around 2,790 compared with 2021.
WHAT HAS CHANGED SINCE CORONA?
The Corona years 2020 and 2021 had each seen new lows since statistics began in 1950, with 2,719 and 2,562 road traffic fatalities, respectively. One reason for the declines is that, according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority, significantly fewer kilometers were driven on German roads in 2020 and 2021 than before the Corona pandemic.
The number of people injured in 2022 compared with 2021 will also increase by around nine percent, or 30,000, to approximately 353,000. The number of accidents recorded by the police is also expected to be higher than in the previous year: more than 2.4 million accidents are expected on Germany’s roads in 2022, which would be around four percent more than in 2021. The number of accidents involving personal injury is expected to increase by around nine percent to approximately 283,000. The number of accidents involving property damage is expected to increase by around two percent to 2.1 million. By comparison, in 2019, which was unaffected by the pandemic, police recorded just under 2.7 million accidents, including 300,000 with personal injury, in which 3,046 people were killed.
GIVING THE STATISTICS
In September 2022, 252 people were killed in road accidents in Germany. As the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) further reports according to preliminary results, this was 19 fewer people than in September 2021. The number of people injured in September 2022 fell by five percent year-on-year to around 34,100. There were also 23 fewer traffic fatalities and 1,900 fewer injuries (- 5%) compared to September 2019, which was unaffected by the pandemic.
From January to September 2022, the police recorded a total of around 1.8 million road accidents. This was five percent more than in the corresponding period of the previous year. This included around 216,800 accidents involving personal injury (+12%), in which 2,111 people were killed. This means that the number of road fatalities increased by eleven percent or 214 people compared with the first nine months of 2021. The number of people injured on the roads increased by 13 percent to 269,400 tv bucetas.
In terms of population, an average of 25 people per million inhabitants died in road traffic accidents in Germany in 2022. This figure was highest in Saxony-Anhalt with 54 traffic fatalities per million inhabitants, followed by Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Lower Saxony with 40 and 35 traffic fatalities per million inhabitants, respectively. At six, nine and ten, respectively, this figure was well below the national average in the city states of Berlin, Bremen and Hamburg. The ratio was also low in Saarland and North Rhine-Westphalia, with 19 traffic fatalities per million inhabitants.
Compared with the previous year, accident figures are on the rise. However, the low was a result of the extreme Corona requirements. Compared to the pre-Corona year 2020, however, the downward trend continues.
The road traffic accident statistics record all accidents recorded by the police in which personal injury or property damage occurred on public roads and squares. The number of traffic fatalities has been declining sharply for years, as has the number of people seriously injured.
There are many reasons for this: in addition to legal regulations (maximum speed on rural roads, mandatory use of helmets, seat belts and child seats, changes in blood alcohol concentration), improved vehicle technology and road construction measures play a major role.
